Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS)? Till 1995 a secret deformity of the spine. Now - no more and also no more "idiopathic" (idiopathic mean - no described causes). In this website all about scoliosis explained in years /1995 - 2007/.
Healthy child (photo on left) -without spine deformity.
(1) Symmetry of hips movement (range of adduction left : right hip presented on the picture). Examination of adduction - in straight position of the joint (important !). See methods of examination in other pictures / figures of this presentation / website. Also symmetry of internal and external rotation of both hips.
(2) Next - symmetry of loading left & right side of the body (of hips, pelvis, spine) during gait.
(3) Next - symmetry of time of standing "at ease" on the left & right leg. No more on the right leg, what is typical for all children with scoliosis. Please - check your children and yourself in next days !!
(4) And - never will develop so-called idiopathic scoliosis ("so-called idiopathic" - new term from 1995, because the etiology is explained and is no more "idiopathic"). Well - now causal prophylaxis is possible and only new treatment by using new exercises is correct !
So-called idiopathic scoliosis appear at the child, when exist asymmetry of hips movement - next influence is connected with - "function" - gait(1) & standing(2).
Development of scoliosis is only due to causal influence: (1)gait & (2)permanent standing 'at ease' on the right leg.
Important is specific "model of hips movement" (2006 - look all photos down). There are: three types of movement left / right hip - there are three groupes & four types of scoliosis.
Causes & Classification:
"S" I epg scoliosis: causal influence gait (1) and standing (2) 'at ease' on the right leg. Two curves. 3D. Stiff spine. Progression. Some cases - lordoscoliosis. Specific "model of hips movement" - see photos.
[2A 2B] "C" II/A epg scoliosis - causal influence only standing (2), in "S" II/B epg scoliosis: standing (2) plus laxity of joints and/or incorrect previous therapy (exercises). Flexible spine. 1D or 2D. Some cases - kifoscoliosis (kiphoscoliosis). No progression or mild. Specific "model of hips movement" - see photos.
"I" III epg scoliosis": causal influence only gait (1). No or small curves. Stiff spine. Till 1995 - 2007 no included to "scoliosis group". 2D or 3D. Children - problem with sport, because of stiff spine! Adults - pain. Specific "model of hips movement" - see photos.
Summary (see pictures down): there are - three groups and four types of the so-called idiopathic scoliosis (new classification: T. Karski 1995-2007).
It is ENGLISH VERSION - Point (17) on left - very important ! Look the recent articles about so-called idiopathic scoliosis (Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis - AIS) and other orthopaedic problems - papers published in Czech Republic, in USA and in Canada - 2013 - 2014 - 2015 (17). Look also both lectures presented in London in 9th - 11th June 2016 on International Physiotherapy Conference. Go first (click) to (9) FOTOS / PHOTOS / WYKLADY / LECTURES on left. Next click to London No 1 and London No 2 (both lectures on bottom in the list).
Please find the all information from the time 1995 - 2007/2018 about "so-called idiopathic scoliosis" and other orthopaedic problems. The full information about the problem of aetiology and the new treatment (exercises) are in many LECTURES in chapter "FOTOS / PHOTOS / WYKŁADY / LECTURES" (click on left).
About so-called idiopathic scoliosis I have spoken also in Polish Ministry of Health (MofH) in Warsaw
on 23rd January 2006,
on 7th March 2007,
on 19th June 2007,
on 5th October 2016.
In last meeting had to take part also Dr Marian Domagała - from Medical Centrum in Łaszczow, Dr Włodzimierz Kwieciński - the Chairman of the Traditional Karate Federation of Poland and President of the World Traditional Karate-Do Federation, Mgr Andrzej Maciejewski - Vice Chairman of the Traditional Karate Federation of Poland. During this meeting - we have spoken about many problems in orthopedics - about possibilities of prophylaxis of hip dysplasia, of valgus deformity of the knee, of the varus deformity of shank, wry neck, back pain, knee arthrosis, hip arthrosis, about foot problems, about new syndrome - "permanent rotation distorsion of the ankle joint" of left foot by drivers and right foot by passengers (in countries with "right rules of traffic"). About this last problem two publications: in ARJMS and in Crimsons Journal in USA - 2017. Long discussion was about scoliosis. We informed Ministry that causal prophylaxis of scoliosis is possible (!), that karate or other far Easter Sport are not only sport arts - but also the best method of treatment and prophylaxis in scoliosis (!).
So-called idiopathic scoliosis - many years "secret deformity of the spine". Now it is no more "enigma of the spine" and no more "anti-miracle" - "deformed spine". The both words "enigma" and "miracle" is taken from the lecture of Prof. Dietrich Schlenzka / Finland (Helsinki). Title of this lecture was: "The human spine - Miracle & Enigma" (presented in Zakopane / Poland / 2006).
Short history about lectures, articles & important dates:
1995 - first lecture about scoliosis during Orthopedic Congress in Szeged / Hungary /
1996 - first at all publication about biomechanical etiology of scoliosis in "Orthopadisches Praxis" in Germany. Here many thanks to Prof. K. F. Schlegel - Chief of Orthopaedic Department in Essen / Germany - my stay in Essen in 1973 as DAAD participant (DAAD Stipendiat - Germ.)
1995/1997 - discovering that all scoliosis children have the habit to stand "at ease" only or mostly on the right leg. Important "cumulative time of standing".
2001 - new classification - description of the "S" I epg and "C" II/A epg and "S" II/B epg scoliosis group
2004 description of the "I" III epg scoliosis group - after discussion with Prof. Keith Luk (the picture down) and Prof. Kenneth Cheng in Hong Kong (2004)
2006 description of the "biomechanical model of movements of hips and type of scoliosis" - "S" I epg / "C" II/A epg & "S" II/B epg / "I" III epg
2007 - (1) my answer why the completely blind children do not have scoliosis. Answer & explanation: other manner of walking, without lifting of legs, standing safe on both legs. (2) description of "indirect" influences of the CNS in infants and/to scoliosis in future. There are: a/ extension contracture of trunk, b/ anterior tilt of pelvis, c/ laxity of joints. All: a/ b/ c/ connected with MBD.
The new rehabilitation treatment and causal prophylaxis of scoliosis - aim of "Bone and Joint Decade 2000-2010". Important: "Prevention and Treatment of Musculosceletal Disorders". Quotation: "...Osteoarthritis is the 4th most frequent predictes cause of health problems world-wide in women and the 8th in men" (Murray JL, Lopez AD)...Back pain is the second leading cause of work place sick leave..." - Professor Lars Lidgren MD PhD (from Lund, Sweden - on the picture together with me) - Chairman of the International Steering Committee - had written about necessity of "understanding of musculosceletal disorders through research to improve prevention and treatment".
The discovery of aetiology of the so-called idiopathic scoliosis (1995 - 2007) open the way for "causal prevention of this spine deformity for every child over the world". The prophylaxis should be introduced just in children in age of 3 - 4 - 5 years ! And I wait for this prophylaxis just from (1995) or from (1984) years !!!
About "scoliosis problems" - first observations - 1984 during my stay (scholarship) in Helsinki in Invalid Foundation Hospital.
next - 1995 - first lecture about scoliosis in Orthopedic Congress in Szeged / Hungary.
1996 - first publication in Germany in Orthop. Praxis.
In years 2002, 2006, 2008, 2012 many publications in Materials of IRSSD Congresses with participation in Athens, Ghent, Liverpool, Poznan.
In years 2012 - 2017 many publications in Canada, USA, Spain, Czech Republic (T. Karski - 6.03.2018)
On both pictures - discussion about scoliosis in Hong Kong, 2004 with Prof. Keith Luk and Team of the Orthopedic Department
